The Shops at Montebello found a way to invigorate the center while also adding color using art in the landscape. Center trash cans needed to be updated with a fresh coat of paint and the idea of an art program emerged as a way to create a space for community and arts based placemaking. An artist call resulted in a group of local graffiti artists that represented the center’s diverse demographic while also tapping into talent from the nearby LA Art District. Made in Montebello was an painting event that encouraged shoppers to engage and participate with the finalists as they painted trash cans.
